Advanced Nursing Practice

Advanced practice in nursing describes a level of nursing practice that uses advanced and improved expertise, experience and knowledge in estimation, arrangement, execution, diagnosis and evaluation of the care needed.  Advanced practice nurses are licensed at the state level and accredited by national nursing organizations. Nurses practicing at this level are educationally arranged at the post-graduate level and may work either as specialists or as generalist capacity. Registered nurses working at this advanced level must comply with the following standards.

  • Have an active NMC registration
  • Practice within the four elements
  • Have a job plan that reflects advanced nursing practice and has credibility with colleagues at this stage
  • Be educated at the Masters level
  • Be an independent prescriber
  • Meet the criteria for NMC revalidation
  • Manifest autonomous authentication
